The communications director will be responsible for planning and executing a communications plan to draw attention and support to the initiative and to establish partnerships with other entities in education, business, philanthropy and government to maximize impact and overall success.
Job responsibilities include:
Developing national, state and local communications strategies and activities.
Develop relationships with the press and other media to expand awareness of the national initiative.
Develop press releases, advertorials, op ed. articles, brochures, and other communications devices,
Develop and coordinate a plan for cultivating potential donor partners.
Reach out to existing education, government and business partners to gain support and collaboration in the execution of the mission.
Serve as the key contact for the news media and serve as spokesperson for NMSI as appropriate
Plan and oversee the development of multi media presentation, documentaries and vignettes to highlight the success of local programs
Design and coordinate distribution of a regular NMSI newsletter
Using a content management tool, regularly update the NMSI website
Qualifications include:
Bachelor’s or higher degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related fields
Experience in communications as a consultant, private contractor or communications director of an organization.
Experience in developing multi media presentations and messages
Understanding of how the press media works and how to get stories, op eds, etc. placed in state and national publications
Fundraising experience preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Ability to work well with people and establish lasting professional relationships
Creative and able to work independently and in team
Good task management skills including meeting tight timelines without sacrificing quality
2. Math, Science, and English Directors
A Math, Science, or English Director should be the champion for his or her subject area in implementing an effective training and incentive program across the state.This person must play many roles, which include coordinating the subject area’s program to ensure consistency of subject area delivery across the state, developing intellectual capital, and advocating for the training and incentive program.This person must be committed to the success of the program and will be responsible for driving progress and managing toward intended outcomes.
Responsibilities include:
Coordinate the Math, Science, or English program to ensure consistency and excellence across grantees
Develops the strategic plan for delivering a training and incentive program for math, science, or English
Ensures each district is adhering to that strategic plan through frequent, data-driven reports and observations on performance and progress
Develop and share intellectual capital
Develops and leverages service offerings (e.g. trainings and materials), methodologies, and tools to ensure each grantee’s program is bringing the best and most current thinking to schools
Remains an expert in the subject and attends any relevant national gatherings in his/her field
Be a champion of the program
Represents the organization at meetings in his/her field
Communicates proactively with the school community, press, and various stakeholders
Reports to the National NMSI MSE Director
Provides curricular support as needed to all program teachers, including:
Mentoring state content directors and conducting trainings as needed
Acting as a sounding board and problem-solver for issues that arise
Qualifications include:
Significant experience in the education field
Significant class-room experience with outstanding results as an AP teacher
Experience conducting local, state, regional, or national workshops
Respected as an AP authority
A graduate degree or degree in their field (e.g. a Math or Science degree) with a teaching certification is preferred but not necessary if the above three qualifications are met
Relevant experience in managing multiple projects or clients
Experience in consulting or other entrepreneurial ventures
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to work effectively on several projects, to prioritize, and to delegate
Strong analytical capabilities and tendency toward data-based decision making
Problem-solving attitude, including being flexible, positive, and service-oriented
Ability to produce materials, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Excel) and Adobe professional
For Science Director, proficiency in science technologies, including PASCO, Vernier, TI graphing calculators, LoggerPro, and/or ChemDraw
Ability to travel, likely to be at least 50% of time
